Ceramic Materials

Ceramic coatings are characterized by high hardness, wear resistance, chemical resistance and heat and electrical insulating properties. It is often the combination of two or three of these properties that makes the application of ceramic materials interesting. Only the impact and shock resistance is a point of attention due to the brittle character of ceramics. Frequently used oxides are aluminium oxide, chromium oxide, titanium oxide, zirconium oxide, optionally as mixed oxide. .

Smoothly finished ceramic layers have favourable frictional properties and are therefore extremely suitable for O-ring and O-ring seals and mechanical shaft seals. Ceramic coatings are therefore also used on hydraulic rods, among other things. Aluminium oxide and chromium oxide - whether or not mixed with titanium oxide which makes the top layer slightly more ductile - are often a good choice.

A completely different application of a ceramic coating is the Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC). The heat-insulating coating protects the components of, for example, a gas turbine or an internal combustion engine against the extremely high temperature of the combustion gases. The application of ceramic coatings at strongly fluctuating temperatures does require attention to tensions in the coating. These can arise due to large differences in the coefficient of expansion between ceramic and metal.

Zink wordt net als aluminium vaak toegepast voor kathodische bescherming van staalconstructies; ook zink is een onedel metaal en bezit de eigenschap van passivering. Zink gebruiken we vaak als afdeklaag op grote constructies, waarbij eventueel ook verfcoatings worden toegepast voor zeer duurzame atmosferische corrosiebescherming. In tegenstelling tot aluminium biedt zink actieve bescherming. Zink is echter minder chemisch resistent dan aluminium en is daardoor enkel geschikt voor neutrale en basische milieus.

Naast aluminium- en zinkcoatings bestaan er ook Zinkal-coatings. Deze deklaag combineert de voordelen van deklagen van zink en aluminium.

Door de hoge hardheid tot wel 60-66 HRc, de microporueze olie-absorberende coatingstructuur en de lage wrijving zijn molybdeen coatings (met Mo2C karbides) de ideale oplossing voor lagerzittingen en andersoortige glij- en afdichtingstoepassingen die slijtagebestendigheid biedt en zonodig ook noodloopeigenschappen. Molybdeen coatings bieden zeer goede hechting en kunnen daardoor ook prima op geharde oppervlakken worden toegepast.
